Salvianolic acid C is a natural compound that inhibits the production of inflammatory mediators in response to lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Salvianolic acid C also has inhibitory properties against infectious diseases such as HIV, influenza, and malaria. Salvianolic acid C is an inhibitor of toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) and p2y receptors. The molecular docking analysis suggests that salvianolic acid C binds to the active site of TLR4 and blocks the binding of LPS. Salvianolic acid C also blocks the activation of nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) by inhibiting protein kinase A. This compound can be used as a model system for studying drug interactions. It is approved in Japan for use in treating acute myocardial infarction, but it is not approved in Western countries.
