Triethyl phosphine is a model system for the study of metal carbonyls, which are used in the manufacture of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. It has been shown to inhibit bacterial growth and induce cell death by disrupting the mitochondrial membrane potential in human cells. Triethyl phosphine is also an antirheumatic drug that inhibits ATP production and prevents the release of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) from mitochondria. Human serum x-ray diffraction data show that triethyl phosphine binds to nitrogen atoms, while x-ray crystal structures show that it binds to carbon atoms and hydrolyzes trifluoroacetic acid.
