- Flupoxam [ISO:BSI]
Flupoxam is a fluorine-containing molecule that inhibits the mitochondrial cytochrome P450. It is an active analog of flumioxazin, which is a herbicide that inhibits lipid biosynthesis in plants. Flupoxam has been shown to inhibit fatty acid synthesis in human cells, and it has been used as a specific agent for treatment of cancer. Flupoxam also shows an inhibitory effect on the transport of drugs across cell membranes. Flupoxam binds to lipid bilayers and prevents movement of organic molecules across the membrane by competitive inhibition and steric hindrance. The fluoroquinolone group on flupoxam prevents binding to DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, preventing bacterial replication. Flupoxam has been shown to have no effect on mitochondrial cytochrome P450 in humans or mice, making it a potential therapeutic agent for those with impaired liver function.
