Tetrahydro-1,3,4,6-tetramethylimidazo(4,5-d)imidazole-2,5(1H,3H)-dione (DMTI) is a phosphotungstic acid analog that has been shown to have potent synergic activity with pharmacological agents used in the treatment of congestive heart failure. It increases ATP production in cells by inhibiting the enzyme pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase and stimulating protein kinase C. DMTI also has an effect on energy metabolism by increasing the concentration of adenosine monophosphate (AMP) and decreasing the concentration of adenosine triphosphate (ATP).
