3,4,4'-Trichlorocarbanilide is a chemical compound that is used as a model system for benzalkonium chloride. It has been shown to have a high affinity for the blood sampling matrix and can be used to study the interaction of benzalkonium chloride with biological samples. 3,4,4'-Trichlorocarbanilide has also been shown to have receptor activity and inhibitory effect on the multidrug efflux pump in gram-positive bacteria. This chemical is often used in conjunction with triclosan or p-hydroxybenzoic acid to maintain the effectiveness of antimicrobial agents.
