2-Thiouracil-5-carboxylic acid is a molecule that contains nitrogen atoms. It is a derivative of thiouracil, which has been shown to be an effective antitumor agent in experimental animals. 2-Thiouracil-5-carboxylic acid has also been shown to inhibit bacterial growth and possess antibacterial activity in vitro. It binds to the sulfoxide group of proteins and inhibits the formation of selenouridine, a reaction that is essential for the synthesis of selenoproteins. 2-Thiouracil-5-carboxylic acid also inhibits tumour cell growth in vitro by binding to melanotic cells, inhibiting their proliferation and inducing apoptosis. This molecule has not been found to be mutagenic or carcinogenic.
