- Benzo[b]thiophene-3-carboxylic acid, 4,5,6,7-tetrahydro-
Phenylthiourea is a heterocyclic compound that can be synthesized by the oxidation of 4,5,6,7-tetrahydro-1-benzothiophene-3-carboxylic acid. This compound has been shown to inhibit tyrosinase activity in animals and may be useful in the prophylaxis and/or treatment of erectile dysfunction or other diseases related to sexual dysfunction. Phenylthiourea also inhibits diphenolase activity and is thereby an inhibitor of phenol degradation. Phenylthiourea is used as a reagent for the detection of phenolase enzymes. It has been shown to inhibit some bacteria, including Mycobacterium tuberculosis, but not others such as Staphylococcus aureus.
