It has been shown to be useful in the diagnosis of hepatic hydroxylase deficiency and sepiapterin reductase deficiency. 6-(L-1,2,3-Trihydroxybutyl)-pterin can be found in mammalian tissue samples and biological fluids such as blood samples. 6-(L-1,2,3-Trihydroxybutyl)-pterin can be used to measure the levels of pterins in these tissues and fluids.
