4,5,6,7-Tetrahydro-1H-benzo[d]imidazole is a 5-HT3 receptor antagonist that inhibits the synthesis of cyclic nucleotides. It has been shown to be effective in the treatment of metabolic disorders such as obesity and diabetes. Zacopride is a synthetic hydroxy group derivative of 4,5,6,7-tetrahydro-1H-benzo[d]imidazole. This drug is an enantiomer of nitro and was synthesized by adding a carboxylic acid to the alkylthio group. The effects of zacopride are mediated through activation of 5HT3 receptors on vagal afferents. This drug has been shown to be effective in treating trigeminal neuralgia and other types of pain associated with this disorder.
