4-Toludine-2,5-disulfonicacid is a chromotrope that has an optimum of around pH 2. It is used as a reagent in analytical chemistry to detect the presence of nitrite ions. 4-Toludine-2,5-disulfonicacid binds to nitrite ions and changes color from yellow to pink, which can be seen by spectrophotometry. This reaction can be accelerated with the use of sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide. 4-Toludine-2,5-disulfonicacid is also used in chromatography as a stationary phase. The compound has a high affinity for anions and will bind to them more strongly than cations.
