Descripción

1,3,5-Trimethyl-2-(trichloromethyl)benzene (1,3,5-TCMB) is a solvent with a low boiling point and is used in the production of pesticides, including DDT. It is used as a reaction medium for the synthesis of pyridinium salts. In addition to being used as a solvent, 1,3,5-TCMB can be oxidized to form pyridine or reduced to form trimethylamine. 1,3,5-TCMB reacts with alcohols and yields spectra that are different from those obtained from other solvents. The interaction between 1,3,5-TCMB and chlorides is also unique.
1,3,5-TCMB has been shown to have carcinogenic effects on animals when it is administered orally or intraperitoneally. It has also been shown to cause liver cancer in rats following chronic exposure.
