2-p-Tolyl-imidazo[1,2-a]pyridine is a thermodynamically stable molecule that can be synthesized in one step from thionyl chloride and dimethylamine. The compound is a potential drug candidate for the treatment of bacterial infections, with bacteriostatic properties. 2-p-Tolyl-imidazo[1,2-a]pyridine has been shown to inhibit the growth of Proteus mirabilis and Escherichia coli in vitro. It was also found to be active against Clostridium difficile and Bacillus subtilis. This compound has been shown to bind to DNA through an imine bond, which may account for its anti-bacterial activity.
