Triethylgermaniumchloride is an organometallic compound that has been used as a light-emitting catalyst, a polymerization catalyst, and an antimicrobial agent. Triethylgermaniumchloride has been shown in vitro to have antibacterial properties against gram-positive bacteria. It binds to the hydroxyl group of lipids and destroys bacterial cell membrane integrity by releasing hydrogen chloride. Triethylgermaniumchloride also enhances the immune system by inhibiting autoimmune diseases such as arthritis and lupus erythematosus.
