Tetra-n-butylurea is an organic compound that has been used as a solvent and extractant. It is also used in the synthesis of dibutylhydrogenated amine, which is a reaction product of hydrogen peroxide with amines. Tetra-n-butylurea reacts with hydrogen peroxide to form an intermediate, which can be detected by spectrophotometric methods at 400 nm. Tetra-n-butylurea is sensitive to oxidation by air, so it should be stored in a cool dry place away from light. The decomposition products of tetra-n-butylurea are water vapor and hydrochloric acid. Tetra-n-butylurea also has the ability to reduce metal ions such as ferric ions, for example in wastewater treatment. Redox potentials are the driving force for this reduction process.
