Thiamine is an essential vitamin that participates in a number of metabolic processes. Thiamine sulfate hydrochloride (TSH) is the most common form of thiamine and is water-soluble. TSH is absorbed by the small intestine and then transported to cells by a sodium-dependent, carrier-mediated transport system. The rate of absorption varies depending on the animal species and can be measured using a kinetic assay. It has been shown to have high affinity for liver cells, but not for other tissues such as heart, brain, or kidney. TSH has been shown to undergo decarboxylation in alkaline environments with cyanogen bromide and 2,2'-bithiophene as catalysts. TSH is also competitively inhibited by betaine and butanol.
