Trans-2-Butene-1,4-dicarboxylic acid is a metabolite of caproic acid and has been shown to have a role in the regulation of mitochondrial functions. It has been demonstrated that trans-2-butene-1,4-dicarboxylic acid is able to inhibit the activity of s-phenylmercapturic acid oxidase, which is involved in the metabolism of benzoate. This compound also reacts with benzene to form trans-2-butene 1,4 dicarboxylic acid benzyl ester. Trans 2 butene 1,4 dicarboxylic acid has been shown to be a potential biomarker for metabolic disorders.
