Trihydroxystearin is a solid, high molecular weight (Mw) polyester that is used as a detergent composition. It has a particle size of less than 100 microns and is composed primarily of fatty acid residues. Trihydroxystearin contains antimicrobial agents that inhibit the growth of bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms. The hydrogenated form of trihydroxystearin has been shown to have lower toxicity than the non-hydrogenated form. This product also can be cross-linked with epichlorohydrin to produce polymers with improved film-forming properties. The viscosity of trihydroxystearin is increased by glycerin, which is often used as an additive in detergent compositions.
