The reaction mechanism of 1,4-thioxane has been shown to be a nucleophilic attack at the carbon atom adjacent to the hydroxyl group on the ring. This reaction can also be described as an addition reaction between thiols and electrophiles such as hydrogen bromide or trifluoromethanesulfonic acid (TFMSA). 1,4-Thioxane has also been shown to react with pyridine and form pyridinium salts which are detectable by NMR spectroscopy.
