2,2,3,3-Tetramethylbutane-1,4-diol is a diol that belongs to the group of phenylalanine derivatives. It is a crystalline solid with melting point of -70°C. The crystal structure was determined by x-ray crystallography and found to be a cyclic molecule with six hydrogen atoms and four methyl groups. The 2,2,3,3-Tetramethylbutane-1,4-diol has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria in vitro. The mechanism of action is due to its ability to bind to amines and form alkylation products that are toxic for cells.
