Tricobalt tetraoxide is a metal oxide that is used as a catalyst in the production of polypropylene. Tricobalt tetraoxide is a powder with a particle size range of 0.1-150 microns, and it has an average diameter of about 1 micron. It can be prepared by reacting lithium or sodium hydroxide with oxides such as phosphorus pentoxide, aluminum oxide, silicon dioxide, or zirconium oxide. The reaction generates hydrogen gas and water vapor while producing tricobalt tetraoxide as well as other metal oxides. Tricobalt tetraoxide has an analytical method that involves measuring its electrical conductivity in the presence of hydrochloric acid and sodium carbonate at different temperatures.
