Tetramethrin is a neurotoxic insecticide that inhibits the activity of the enzyme acetylcholinesterase, which is responsible for the breakdown of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Tetramethrin has been shown to be highly resistant to metabolic degradation in plants and mammals, but not in bacteria. The high resistance of tetramethrin to bacterial metabolism was determined by an in vitro method using calf thymus DNA as a substrate. Tetramethrin also has limited solubility in water and benzalkonium chloride can be used to increase its solubility. The toxicity of tetramethrin is studied in rats and mice, with LD50 values around 2 mg/kg bodyweight for oral administration or 5 mg/kg bodyweight for dermal administration. Tetramethrin is transported by drug transporters such as P-glycoprotein (P-gp) and Breast Cancer Resistance Protein (BCRP). Tetramethrin exhibits low skin irritation
