Tetrakis(p-hydroxyphenyl)ethane (TPE) is a polycarboxylic acid that forms a cross-link with methyl ethyl, epoxy, and hydroxide solution. This chemical is used as a cross-linking agent in the production of borosilicate glasses. It reacts with diphenyl sulfoxide to form an intermediate that can react with calcium carbonate to form a product. The reactions of TPE have been studied extensively for the production of active substances such as esters and amides from carboxylic acids. TPE has also been shown to be an effective catalyst for the synthesis of organic compounds containing a hydroxyl group or hydrogen bonding interactions.
