2-Toluidine is a chemical compound that belongs to the group of amines. It is used in the production of dyes and pharmaceuticals. 2-Toluidine has been shown to have genotoxic effects at high concentrations, which may be due to its reaction with DNA by covalent binding and base modification. 2-Toluidine binds to DNA by hydrogen bonding between nitrogen atoms in the molecule and hydroxyl groups on the bases. The chemical reactions involve hydrochloric acid, which produces protocatechuic acid and p-hydroxybenzoic acid as byproducts. These compounds are then excreted from the body through urine or bile. 2-Toluidine is metabolized rapidly and has a low bioavailability, so it is not likely to accumulate in tissue or cause toxicity.
