Tosyl-L-asparagine is a solvolytic agent that inhibits melanogenesis. It has been shown to inhibit the production of hydroxyproline, threonine, and histidine in the presence of amide or carboxylate groups. Tosyl-L-asparagine also inhibits the activity of tyrosinase, which is an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of tyrosine to DOPA (dihydroxyphenlyalanine). In addition, it inhibits the oxidation of DOPA and suppresses the formation of melanin. This compound also binds to metal ions such as copper, iron, and zinc and forms ternary complexes with them.
Tosyl-L-asparagine has not been found to have any adverse effects on humans or animals at doses up to 100 mg/kg in experiments.
