N-(Trifluoroacetyl)daunorubicin is a chlorinated, water-soluble derivative of daunorubicin, which is an organic compound. It has been shown to be effective against several types of cancer in vivo. N-(Trifluoroacetyl)daunorubicin has also been shown to bind to metal ions and form ternary complexes with them. This binding prevents the formation of an enzyme-substrate complex that is required for DNA synthesis, inhibiting DNA replication and transcription. The drug has been found to have significant antitumor activity in vitro against a number of tumor cell lines. N-(Trifluoroacetyl)daunorubicin inhibits the growth of cells by binding to activated fatty acids on the surface of cells and also by binding amines on proteins within the cell's cytoplasm, thereby preventing protein synthesis.
