It is activated by various methods and can be used in an introduction strategy to introduce bond cleavage sequences or dehydration reactions. This molecule has been shown to catalyze the dehydration of sulfoxides and carbapenems. 2,2,5-Trimethyl-1,3-dioxane-4,6-dione also has magnetic resonance properties that make it suitable for voltammetry experiments.
