Trimesic acid has been used as a model for developing new drugs for human serum, which is difficult to study due to its complexity. The x-ray crystal structures of trimesic acid have been determined and show that it has three hydrogen bond interactions with the amine group of an amino acid residue on the protein surface, as well as two intermolecular hydrogen bonds with water molecules. Trimesic acid also shows permeation through a membrane made from human serum albumin, which makes it useful as a drug delivery agent.
