Tetramethylthiuram monosulfide (TTMS) is a zinc diethyldithiocarbamate that has been used in the plastics and rubber industries as a biocompatible polymer. It exhibits low toxicity, high thermal stability, and good resistance to halides and fatty acids. In addition to its industrial applications, TTMS has also been investigated for use in biomedical devices. This compound is insoluble in water but soluble in organic solvents such as ethylene diamine or diamine tetraacetic acid, which makes it suitable for use as a marker protein for electron microscopy. TTMS can be used as a marker protein for electron microscopy because it does not interfere with the detection of other proteins by FT-IR spectroscopy. In vitro toxicity studies have shown that TTMS does not induce lymphocyte transformation or cause DNA damage at concentrations up to 20 mM.
