Triphenylsilanol is a model system for the study of damaged solid catalysts. It has been shown to be thermally stable and can be used as a catalyst in organic reactions. Triphenylsilanol has an hydroxyl group, which allows it to undergo hydrolysis by hydrochloric acid. FT-IR spectroscopy has been used to determine the structure of triphenylsilanol, which is a cationic polymerization catalyst that forms hydrogen bonds with other molecules. Triphenylsilanol also forms intermolecular hydrogen bonds with magnesium salts and x-ray crystal structures have been determined.
