Trimethyl borate is a chemical compound that is a colorless liquid with a strong odor. It can be synthesized by the reaction of boron trioxide and trimethylaluminium, with water as the solvent. The reaction mechanism is thought to involve the formation of trimethylborate and subsequent hydrolysis to form trimethyl borate. Trimethyl borate is reactive and can react with copper chloride at room temperature to form copper(II) borate, which reacts with hydrogen gas to produce hydrogen gas and water vapor. Trimethyl borate has been shown to catalyze palladium-catalyzed coupling reactions, in which an electron-rich organic molecule reacts with a palladium catalyst in the presence of an oxidant to generate a new π-bonded carbon-carbon bond.
