Thioanisole is a reactive sulfide that has been used as a model system for the study of organic reactions. It is prepared by reacting methyl ethyl with hydrogen fluoride in the presence of a catalyst. The mechanism of this reaction has been studied extensively, and it was found that thioanisole undergoes an addition reaction to disulfides, followed by a transfer reaction to sulfoxides. Thioanisole has been shown to be effective in wastewater treatment because it reacts with oxidized sulfur-containing compounds such as sulfides and mercaptans. Thioanisole also exhibits redox potentials similar to those of other sulfides, which means that it can act as an electron donor or acceptor in redox reactions, although its chemical stability is not particularly high.
