It is a colorless liquid that is soluble in water and organic solvents. 2-Toluenesulfonic acid is used as a detergent additive in personal care products, such as shampoos and body washes. It also has been shown to be an effective agent for the treatment of hiv infection, autoimmune diseases, and skin cells. The optimum concentration for 2-toluenesulfonic acid to inhibit receptor activity is between 0.5% to 1%. The structural analysis of this compound shows that it contains a hydroxyl group on the 2 position and a dimethyl fumarate on the 6 position of its ring system.
