It is also used to prepare urinary thiodiglycolates, which are used as matrix effects in analytical chemistry. Thiodiglycolic acid reacts with disulfide bonds to form thiodiglycolate anions, which can be detected by the electron-capture gas chromatography/mass spectroscopy (GC/MS) technique. The LC-MS/MS method was used to measure the concentration of thiodiglycolate anions in urine samples from patients with autoimmune diseases and breast cancer. This compound also has been shown to have low toxicity in animal studies.
