The structural modifications of the molecule were made according to chemical analogy with known nucleobases. The 6-chloropurine moiety was synthesized by modifying the aglycon with chloroethylisocyanide, which was then reacted with 4-trimethoxysilylbenzene using phosphonates as coupling agents.
