It is extracted from the Chinese herb maytenus, and its anticancer activity was first observed in tissue culture experiments. Triptocallic acid A has also been found to be a potent inhibitor of cell proliferation in multiple tumor types, including prostate cancer, lung cancer, colon cancer, and leukemia. Triptocallic acid A binds to the active site of enzymes involved in DNA synthesis and inhibits DNA synthesis by blocking the incorporation of nucleotides into DNA. This leads to apoptosis and reduces the risk of tumor growth.
