Descripción

Trifluoroacetic acid is a chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) that is used as an industrial solvent and feedstock for the synthesis of other chemicals. It can be synthesized from acetonitrile, which is produced by the hydrogenation of nitriles. The reaction is catalyzed by nickel acetate and zinc chloride in dimethylformamide at high yield. The activation of acetonitrile with hydrogen chloride gives trifluoroacetic acid, which has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties in acute lung injury. Trifluoroacetic acid may also be used as an alternative feedstock to propylene oxide in the production of polyurethanes.
