Triethanolamine hydrochloride (TEA) is a monoethyl ether that is used in the synthesis of organic compounds. It reacts with an acid to form a salt and water. The reaction mechanism begins with the nucleophilic attack of TEA on the electrophilic carbonyl carbon atom of an aldehyde or ketone, forming a tetrahedral intermediate. This intermediate then collapses, leading to the formation of the product. TEA has been shown to have high resistance against leukemia inhibitory factor-induced lymphoma cells in vitro and to have low toxicity in rats. In humans, TEA has been shown to be rapidly metabolized by cytochrome P450 enzymes and excreted as metabolites in urine. The activity index for human pharmacokinetics was found to be 1,000 times higher than that for rats. This means that triethanolamine hydrochloride is more readily absorbed by humans than by rats.
