4-(Trifluoromethyl)benzyl alcohol is a functional group that contains a hydroxyl group. It can be synthesized by reacting hydrochloric acid with phosphite, which forms an acid complex. This reaction is used in the process of delignification to remove lignin from wood pulp. This compound has been shown to react with amides and form ternary complexes with them. It also is capable of transporting chloride ions across membranes in activated acrylonitrile (AA). 4-(Trifluoromethyl)benzyl alcohol has been shown to be useful for the transport of amino acids as well as other compounds such as chloride.
