Trimethylstearylammonium chloride (TMSA) is a high-resistance antimicrobial agent with an excellent biocompatibility. TMSA is a nanoparticulate composition that shows good stability and dispersibility in vivo. The antimicrobial activity of TMSA is due to the reaction between TMSA and water, which produces a chemiluminescence reaction. This reaction involves the formation of hydroxyl radicals that are responsible for the oxidative destruction of bacterial cells. It has been shown that TMSA exhibits strong anti-inflammatory activities, which may be due to its hydrophobic effect and methyl ethyl group.
