1,4,7-Triazacyclononane is an organic compound that contains a triazole ring. It has been shown to react with esters through steric interactions and chelate ligands. 1,4,7-Triazacyclononane forms stable complexes with metal ions such as copper (Cu), zinc (Zn) and nickel (Ni). These complexes are formed by intramolecular hydrogen bonds. The stability of these complexes is due to the redox potentials of the metal ions. Esters containing 1,4,7-Triazacyclononane can be synthesized by reacting an alcohol with an aldehyde in the presence of a base catalyst. The reaction mechanism is shown below:
