3,5,6,8-Tetrabromo-1,10-phenanthroline is an aromatic amine that is a ligand. It can be used as a catalyst for the selective oxidation of primary and secondary alcohols to form aldehydes/ketones and carboxylic acids. This compound has been shown to have luminescent properties when it reacts with thionyl chloride to form the corresponding chlorides.
