3,5,6,8-Tetrabromo-1,10-phenanthroline is an aromatic amine that is a ligand. It can be used as a catalyst for the selective oxidation of primary and secondary alcohols to form aldehydes/ketones and carboxylic acids. This compound has been shown to have luminescent properties when it reacts with thionyl chloride to form the corresponding chlorides. The nature of the bonding in 3,5,6,8-tetrabromo-1,10-phenanthroline is covalent. It does not react with inorganic substances because it is an organic compound. The reaction mechanism for this compound involves bond cleavage at the carbon atom adjacent to the bromine atoms on each side of the phenanthrene ring.
