Tetraisopropylthiuram disulfide is a synthetic dithiocarbamic polymerization initiator that has the ability to polymerize glycerin under acidic conditions. It is used in the manufacture of polymers such as polyurethane, polyamide, and polyester. Tetraisopropylthiuram disulfide binds to the receptor site on DNA and inhibits the enzyme RNA polymerase. This blocks RNA synthesis, leading to cell death. Tetraisopropylthiuram disulfide also acts as a particle accelerator for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) replication in vitro.
