(24R)-24-Hydroxycalcitriol is a metabolite of vitamin D3. It is a form of vitamin D that is not biologically active and can be converted to calcitriol, the active form of the vitamin, by 24-hydroxylase. This process occurs in the liver and kidneys. (24R)-24-Hydroxycalcitriol has been shown to have minimal activity in animals, but has been shown to inhibit leukemic cells when it is given orally or expressed recombinantly in cultured cells. The effectiveness of this drug may be due to its ability to bind with toll-like receptor 2 on the surface of leukemia cells and activate them, which leads to cellular apoptosis.
