Tetrabromothiophene is a monomer with four bromine atoms. It has an electron-donating group (acceptor) at the para position and can be synthesized by the reaction of sodium sulfide with metal carbonyls, such as zinc chloride. This monomer can be used to make polymers or copolymers, which are used in ephedrine hydrochloride production. Tetrabromothiophene's nucleophilic attack of anhydrous sodium leads to the formation of cross-coupling products, which can be analyzed using vibrational spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and electrochemical studies. The optical properties of tetrabromothiophene have been extensively studied and it is found that they are sensitive to changes in temperature or solvent composition.
