2,2'-Thiobis(4,6-dichlorophenol) is a model system that has been used to study the antimicrobial effects of synthetic retinoids. These agents are usually sodium salts, which have been shown to inhibit energy metabolism in bacteria and may be effective against bowel disease. 2,2'-Thiobis(4,6-dichlorophenol) also interacts with benzalkonium chloride and other biological studies have shown that these compounds can be toxic to humans.
