It is genotoxic and has been shown to cause mutations in rat liver DNA. 2,3,4-Trihydroxybenzophenone also binds to the receptor binding site of a cellular enzyme called cytochrome P450 and inhibits its function. This causes an increase in population growth. 2,3,4-Trihydroxybenzophenone is excreted from the body in urine samples. It can be detected by an analytical method that can measure the concentration of hydroxyl groups present on the molecule.
