Tussilagone is a natural compound found in the plant Aspilia tussilaginea that has been shown to have anti-allergic effects. It inhibits the Toll-like receptor (TLR) 4, TLR2, and TLR9, which are proteins involved in the inflammatory response to bacterial infection. Tussilagone also has anti-inflammatory properties, which may be due to its inhibition of dextran sulfate induced colitis in mice. Tussilagone has been shown to suppress neuronal death by inhibiting caspase-3 activity. This compound also prevents the activation of p38, JNK1/2, and ERK1/2 pathways as well as apoptosis induced by serum deprivation or oxidative stress. Tussilagone has been shown to inhibit human serum albumin from binding with fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) and this property can be used for analytical purposes.
