The compound is synthesized by reacting anilines with trifluoroacetic acid and activated chloride in the presence of a nucleophilic anion (e.g., sodium sulfide). This reaction produces chloroform as a byproduct. 3,4,5-Trichloronitrobenzene can be reduced to 3-nitroaniline using mercuric chloride or photochemically with ultraviolet light.
