Trifluoroethane is a colorless, odorless gas that has been used as a refrigerant since the 1930s. It is not toxic to humans and animals, but is an ozone depleting substance and a greenhouse gas. It is also used in the laboratory for various purposes such as thermal expansion studies and genotoxicity activity tests. Trifluoroethane is not readily absorbed through the skin and does not cause skin irritation. The chemical reaction between trifluoroethane and hydrogen fluoride produces trifluoroacetic acid, which has been shown to be carcinogenic in mice.
