Tetrafluorotoluene undergoes nucleophilic attack at the carbon-halogen bond, which leads to C-H bond cleavage. The methyl groups present in the molecule increase its reactivity towards electrophiles and nucleophiles. The tetrahydroaluminate anion reacts with this compound to form tetrahydroaluminoxane (THAO). This is an important intermediate in the production of polymers such as polyethylene.
